The team turned out for their first fixture of 2017 looking resplendent in their new tracksuits – funded by their new sponsor, Tescos @ Barnham Inn.
After a 3 week break and only one training session to undo the excesses of Christmas (and that was just the coaching team) it was anyone’s guess which Barnham team would turn up on the day. Any misgivings were put to rest from the first whistle. Barnham started very well and soon settled into their normal passing game and dominated possession during the first half. The Colts defended very well and chances were few and far between for both teams. The game developed into quite a physical battle with the Colts, being a big team, winning this aspect of the game. The Colts had a glorious chance to take the lead on 25 mins when a rebound sent through their striker with only the keeper to beat. He chose to shoot as Calum (GK) came out to close him down which resulted in a superb one handed save down to his right. Overall a balanced half with few chances for either side.
The second half started much like the first but after a few minutes the momentum began to shift in the Trojan’s favour. The physical game began to take its’ toll on some of the Colts players and Barnham began to find some more space. The link up play down either wing was working very well. What was lacking was the final ball into the danger zone. That changed after 10 minutes of the second half. A neat move down the right resulting in a cross that eventually ended up at the feet of Ellis who pulled the trigger to score in the right hand corner. Or so we thought – an offside flag was raised very late and after the ref had awarded the goal. But the (Colts) linesman was insistent and after a 5 minute discussion the ref reversed his decision and awarded Colts the free kick. This inspired the Trojans and they were more determined to get the 3 points. The defence performed brilliantly all game and Colts could not break them down and resorted to a few speculative efforts that did not trouble the keeper.
With 10 mins to go the Trojans began to exploit their opponents energy levels. Coming from the right again Finley found Max in acres of space, as the Colts defence went awol, for simple tap in to take the lead. Justice was restored 5 minutes later when Ellis grabbed his ‘second’ goal of the game with a good finish from 15 yards into the bottom right hand corner after some good work from Bailey at right wing back.
It was a good game to watch and great to see the Trojans keeping their focus and sticking to the game plan. The defence need to be mentioned again as they were superb all game. Rhys (CB) deservedly getting motm.
