Barnham arrived at table toppers Roffey with a depleted team, following a number of late withdrawals due to injury.
This was a massive game for both teams. A Roffey win would give them the title in their last league game, a Barnham win would make them favorites to lift the league trophy but they still have four tough games to play.
Roffey started well and played the ball around nicely but Barnham makeshift team restricted them to a handful of chances (once hitting the post!) and created a few counter attack opportunities themselves. A debatable penalty call didn’t go Barnham’s way when it appeared Frazer was pushed to the ground when on goal.
Although Roffey had more possession, the half was about even on chances created.
Additional injuries for Barnham meant further adjustments to the team formation. At one point, Barnham were down to 9 fit players (11 still on the field) but despite this they stuck to the task and took the lead through Joe Taylor, a superb strike when his pace left the defence behind.
Roffey equalized after some confusion in the box, a clever finish / lob from their striker.
Within minutes, Barnham took the lead again. Another goal for Joe Taylor.
Barnham held on to win the game and, apart from the goal, our keeper wasn’t really troubled in the second half. Under the circumstances, a superb win against a quality side. The lads gave everything for this win – well done!!
Still need to win the last four league games for the title, but at least its back in our hands.
Good luck to Roffey in the Challenge Cup Final.
