A battling display from George & Matts U11 Reds Team meant they came home from their Cup Final at Arundel victorious, with a 3-1 victory over a decent Chichester Colts Team.
After taking their time to settle into the game, some resolute defending kept the score level with Chichester looking to get forward. Then following a good attack, with numbers forward, Lewis finished coolly into the bottom corner to put the Reds ahead.
The game ebbed and flowed right up until half-time when an attack from the whites culminated in them hitting the post.
Coming out for the 2nd Half, the Reds had clearly been told to get forward and test the Chichester defence, and for the opening period Barnham were camped in their opponents half. When they did break out, the Reds were solid in defence with everyone pressing and doing their jobs well. The 2nd goal soon came, from a clearance through the middle, and with the Chichester defence and keeper hesitant, Max never gave up and sneaked in to score for the Reds. As Barnham looked to slow the game down, the lively Chichester winger pulled one back with a shot straight into the far corner. Game on.
With time on the clock running out, Chichester players battled hard, almost getting an equaliser with a good save to his left from Theo keeping a goal in it. The feeling was that there was another goal in the game and with Chichester pushing forward, it was on a break that Rosie charged through and flicked the ball over the keeper, and amid great celebrations, the Trophy was coming back to Barnham.
A great achievement for a team who have finished the season strong, unbeaten in their last 9 games, and have the Ernie Piper Memorial Trophy to show for their efforts. Well done to everyone involved, including Chichester for making this a memorable game.
